Opened in October 2009, the Gallery Cafe is the newest foreign-run cafe in Kashgar. We would like to extend a very warm welcome to travelers of every kind. Since we ourselves have come to Kashgar to explore and soak in an authentic Central Asian experience, we are happy to help you do the same. We offer home style food and drinks and a comfortable atmosphere for you to rest while you plan your next adventure. We also provide reliable tourist information and can book tours and tickets with experienced local guides and travel agencies. Last but not least, our gallery is here to showcase the talent of a variety of artists, which we welcome you to enjoy. Feel free to contact us with any inquiries about Kashgar (map) or the surrounding area. Soon after we opened we enjoyed the visit of CBS news correspondent Terry McCarthy. Here is his report on the silk road.
Welcome to The Kashgar Gallery Cafe
After almost a year of being disconnected from the Internet, XinJiang is back in action. Here in Kashgar thirty-six hours after the Internet first opened the excitement is still fresh. Friends casually ask each other "so how long did you spend on the Internet last night?"
Anyone with a computer out is surely connected to QQ, the main socializing network used in China. Everyone walks with a spring in their step and the weather even seems to have understood...nothing but sunshine for two days. Here at The Kashgar Gallery Cafe we have our wifi set up and our PCs ready for action. Tourists in Kashgar seem caught up in the excitement as well "oooh cool! you have wifi"...as if they've never seen it before.
As for our little traditional Kashgar alleyway, everyone carries on with business as usual. The little boy who broke our cafe's glass door continues to sneak by, hoping to escape our notice. The shoe repair man across the way is as busy as ever. The women of Kashgar present their platform shoes to him hoping for a miracle. The milk man who brings fresh milk everyday honks his horn to announce his arrival to the street. Last but not least, the little kids, after all this time still peer in to get a real good look at the blond foreigner.
Soon the sun will set and perhaps many Kashgarians will spend another sleepless night soaking in all the Internet they can!
